Genoa, municipality's 25 million plan for structural work on beaches

A 25 million euro masterplan for interventions on the Genoa coastline, aimed at making free beaches accessible, beach nourishment, and the restoration of reefs; the Genoa City Council is preparing it with the aim of intervening in a structural manner, putting an end to occasional interventions and proceeding, instead, with a well-defined plan. "The situation of the coastline and sea defences in the area - said Public Works Councillor Massimo Ferrante - is very complex, as we have already pointed out to the Liguria Region, the body responsible for issuing authorisations for structural interventions. We need to go beyond the perspective of spot interventions and, for this reason, we are working on the preparation of an overall master plan of structural interventions, with related funding, which to date we do not believe has been allocated, and we will then be happy to implement the works".

Structural works on the coastline, according to the estimates of the Municipality's Hydraulic Works Department, amount to about 25 million euro, to be financed, for the most part, with resources from the Region; they concern, among other things, the Voltri beach (1.6 million euro - intervention already planned and financed - plus another 3 million euro estimated, for the western stretch); the lido in Piazzale Kennedy (rehabilitation of the cliff, estimated intervention 2.5 million euro); the corso Italia beach (with re-profiling of the cliff and other: estimated intervention 3 million euro); Sturla East and West beach (redevelopment, reorganisation and regeneration of the shoreline, from 1.8 million euro); tiro al piccione reef (completion from 800 thousand euro, necessary after the price increases of the necessary materials, for a total investment of 1.5 million euro) quinto Murcarolo beach (EUR 2.5 million for the defence of the road, with difficulties highlighted on the transport and placement of materials); Garibaldi promenade near Marinella (final project for new soffolta of EUR 1.7 million); Garibaldi promenade near Pagoda hotel (new emerged reef of EUR 800 thousand); Nervi Falesia Capolungo (EUR 1.3 million for the repair of the intermediate and high landslide).

As for the seasonal beach nourishment and reprofiling interventions, Ferrante explained, "all those identified as a priority and necessary have started within the timeframe of the timetable and within the established periods". Seasonal beach nourishment and reprofiling operations are underway, he said, and in part already completed (as regards Boccadasse and Sturla), for a total financial commitment of 282,000 euro on the 30 beaches under municipal jurisdiction, from Vesima to Capolungo.
