After the defections and surprises of the past few days, with the exit of the number one on the scoreboard Nole Djokovic, but also of all the Italians (not since 2016) already in the round of 16, the favourites still in the field for now maintain the predictions of the Internazionali d'Italia in Rome.
German Sasha Zverev won 6-2 7-5 against Portugal's Nuno Borges to reach his fifth quarter-final at the Internazionali. The German will try again to achieve victory in the Capitoline tournament, of which he was champion in 2017 and finalist in 2018. This could be his first Masters 1000 in the last three years, after the one he won in Cincinnati 2021: a match that shows how well Zverev adapts to the Roman ground and where, after a first set closed by the world number 5 in 35 minutes with a score of 6-2, the second fraction showed more balance. The Portuguese world number 53 tried to push his opponent off the court, but Zverev managed to get the better of him mainly thanks to his service turnovers.
Zverev himself will now face the American Taylor Fritz who beat Grigor Dimitrov and became the first active American to reach the quarters in three different Masters 1000s on clay. In the tournament, on the other hand, the fairytale of Chilean Alejandro Tabilo (currently No. 32 Atp) continues, who, after Nole Djokovic, also eliminated Karen Khachanov.
In the afternoon, another Chilean reached the quarters: Nicolas Jarry beat Frenchman Alexandre Muller 7-5 6-3 and will thus face the winner of the challenge between Tsitsipas and De Minaur.
