Germany fears that US support may weaken under the Trump Administration

Germany is reportedly considering changing its position and supporting the extension of the use of frozen Russian assets to finance Ukraine, following new pressure from US President Donald Trump. This is according to Bloomberg news agency.

Sources, who wished to remain anonymous, told Bloomberg that Berlin's change is linked to fears that if US support weakens under the Trump Administration, the main burden of aid to Ukraine would fall on Germany, potentially strengthening the German far right.

Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Heorhiy Tykhy, according to Ukrainian Interfax news agency, confirmed information about theUS approval of the first batch of weapons for Ukraine under the new NATO mechanism called PURL.

The spokesman emphasised that Ukraine's defence needs are high during the war. The Foreign Ministry expects partners to continue supporting the PURL with additional contributions, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is keeping the issue under personal review.

We discussed key issues of cooperation between Ukraine and the European institutions: support for Ukraine's EU accession negotiations and the importance of opening the first cluster as soon as possible; sanctions against Russia and the adoption of the EU's 19th sanctions package; Russian assets; as well as social issues: the construction of school shelters and Europe's support for our free meals programme for all Ukrainian students. We count on the EU's concrete involvement in these issues.

Ukraine expects some $3.5 billion to be available in a fund for arms purchases from the US by next month. This was stated by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The financial arrangement known as the Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List, or PURL, collects contributions from Nato members, with the exception of the United States, for the purchase of American weapons, ammunition and equipment. "We have received more than $2 billion from our partners specifically for the PURL programme," Zelensky said at a joint press conference in Kiev with European Parliament Speaker Roberta Metsola, who is visiting the country, "we will receive additional funds in October. Meanwhile, in the evening, Moscow made it known that 'our troops in the special military operations zone are advancing on practically all fronts'. This was stated by the chief of staff of the Russian Armed Forces, General Valery Gerasimov, quoted by Tass. "Troops are advancing in the city of Kupyansk and successfully in the direction of Krasnolimansk, where the liberation of Kirovsk is almost complete," he explained. The troops "have entered the village of Yampol, where they are conducting combat operations. The enemy has been completely driven out of the Serebryanskoye forest'. Assault units 'are advancing into the village of Seversk. In the direction of Aleksandro-Kalinovsky, they are fighting in the immediate vicinity of Konstantinovka and our units have entered Pleshcheyevka.
