Germany is reportedly considering changing its position and supporting the extension of the use of frozen Russian assets to finance Ukraine, following new pressure from US President Donald Trump. This is according to Bloomberg news agency.
Sources, who wished to remain anonymous, told Bloomberg that Berlin's change is linked to fears that if US support weakens under the Trump Administration, the main burden of aid to Ukraine would fall on Germany, potentially strengthening the German far right.
Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Heorhiy Tykhy, according to Ukrainian Interfax news agency, confirmed information about theUS approval of the first batch of weapons for Ukraine under the new NATO mechanism called PURL.
The spokesman emphasised that Ukraine's defence needs are high during the war. The Foreign Ministry expects partners to continue supporting the PURL with additional contributions, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is keeping the issue under personal review.
"I am pleased to welcome today in Ukraine the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, for her fourth visit in these years of war. We discussed key issues of cooperation between Ukraine and the European institutions: support for Ukraine's EU accession negotiations and the importance of opening the first cluster as soon as possible; sanctions against Russia and the adoption of the EU's 19th sanctions package; Russian assets; as well as social issues: the construction of school shelters and Europe's support for our free meals programme for all Ukrainian students. We count on the EU's concrete involvement in these issues.
