Giani the ubiquitous Dem rooted in the territory
The outgoing governor cashed his encore. In 2020, he was elected president of the Region of Tuscany with 48.62% of the vote, overtaking his centre-right opponent Susanna Ceccardi (who garnered 40.46%) and M5s competitor Irene Galletti (6.4%).
Eugenio Giani, 66, was reconfirmed president of the Region of Tuscany with 54% of the votes, with the support of the wide field that redeemed the defeats in Marche and Calabria. School, work, infrastructures and health are the priorities of Giani's electoral programme, which can count on a vast progressive field: in addition to the PD, there are obviously Avs, M5s, and then, united in the civic list 'Casa riformista' Iv, Più Europa, Psi, and Pri. In 2020 he was elected president of the Region of Tuscany with 48.62% of the votes, overtaking his centre-right opponent Susanna Ceccardi (who collected 40.46%) and M5s competitor Irene Galletti (6.4%).
'I feel like the president of the whole of Tuscany, for me it is an extraordinary satisfaction, it is a thrill to see such an evident and clear result from the very first bars, I think it indicates a Tuscany that decides with autonomy, with its brain and with the values that this region expresses freedom, democracy, social justice. And that looks to the future with a progressive culture'. This is how Eugenio Giani greeted the victory
If there is an embodiment of ubiquity, it is he, Eugenio Giani. Always on the move, an unspeakable amount of inaugural ribbons cut, he has campaigned from the playgrounds to the markets to social media.
The initiatives of the last legislature
The political career
Born on 30 June 1959 in Empoli (Florence), a lawyer with a degree in law from the University of Florence, Giani is a long-standing centre-left politician: in the past he has been a councillor at Palazzo Vecchio, a councillor with numerous responsibilities (from mobility to sport) and president of the city council. A Lombardian, never a Craxian, a close friend of Valdo Spini, he was elected regional councillor in 2015 and became president of the legislative assembly. In 2020 he became a candidate for governor after Enrico Rossi's decade. Against Susanna Ceccardi (League) he struggled at first, but won well, 8 points behind. His greatest boast: having restarted the high-speed train construction sites in Florence, his old favourite.
