Giovanni Brusca, the executioner of Capaci, the capomafia who operated the remote control that triggered the explosion on 23 May 1992 in which Giovanni Falcone, his wife Francesca Morvillo and the agents of the escort died, is free.
The end of May marked the end of the four-year probation period imposed on him by the probation magistracy, the last debt to justice of the San Giuseppe Jato boss who was guilty of dozens of murders and who, after his arrest and after an initial false repentance, decided to cooperate with justice.
In all, he served 25 years in prison: heated controversy followed his release and the decision to put him on probation. Brusca will continue to live far from Sicily under a false identity and will remain under the protection programme.
