Nothing new on the Giro d'Italia front. The Champoluc stage, so feared and so eagerly awaited for its five Grand Prix of the mountains (5,000 metres of altitude difference), changes little or nothing in the picture.

On the contrary, it is still the pink jersey of Isaac Del Toro, the Speedy Gonzales of the Giro, who not only controls his not irresistible rivals but, in the end, beating Carapaz in the sprint for second place, gains further precious seconds on the Ecuadorian and all the other classification rivals,

That they just have to be self-critical and declare themselves defeated. Both for the lack of courage shown and for the irritating and unjustifiable resignation. Apart from Carapaz, who sprinted six kilometres from the finish, the others did not move a finger. Never a flicker. All lined up like a flock of sheep waiting for the call of the shepherd.

It's fine that the heat suddenly broke out, it's fine that the pink jersey was able to count on the perfect support of a team (the Uae) always in control of the big group. But the regret remains for the missed opportunity. They could have fired a cannon shot, but instead it came out a feeble pernacchietta that postpones the final verdict to the penultimate stage at Sestriere.

Only this day, with the dreaded Colle delle Finestre, a 19-kilometre bogeyman with a gradient of 9.3% and the last nine of gravel, can overturn a classification that sees the Mexican firmly in the lead with 43 seconds on Richard Carapaz and 1 minute 23 seconds on Simone Yates, the eternal stall-keeper.

The others are further back Two and a half minutes for the Canadian Derek Gee and 3' 36" for our Damiano Caruso who, in fifth position, somehow defends our residual tricolour hopes.

Lots of sunshine, splendid views with the Rose and Matterhorn still glistening with snow, but it was a pity that the rest of the spectacle was missing. The only one to honour the stage, apart from the pink jersey, was the winner of the day, 28-year-old Frenchman Nicholas Prodhomme, the author of an amazing breakaway that started only 5 kilometres after the Biella start. "I saw that the pace was not very high and so I took advantage of it. Until the last moment I didn't believe it. I was afraid they would catch me. An unforgettable day for me".

And the Italians? Little or nothing. Antonio Tiberi, who also went into a breakaway, was then caught by the pink jersey group. While Giulio Pellizzari, who was always very active, fell just a few metres from the finish, in a sprint that he could easily have avoided. He recovered immediately and should not have suffered any major consequences.

In short, it will be decided at the end credits, in this 20th stage that from Verres, passing through the Colle del Lyls and the Colle delle Finestre (2178 metres, Coppi's summit) then arrives at the Sestiere (2033 m.) for a total of 205 kilometres. On paper, a thrilling stage.

Difficult to make a prediction. In fact, these 50 kilometres through the clouds should favour Richard Carapaz, already winner of the 2019 Giro and usually at ease on these peaks.

The pink jersey, despite being inexperienced (21 years old) has, however, shown that he can defend himself with great ease. Moreover, he is well supported by the only formation - the Uae- that still makes a difference. We shall see. Del Toro has also competed in mountain biking and cyclocross. He is therefore not afraid of dirt roads or those climbs where head-to-head between two riders is almost impossible. Everyone will have to fend for themselves. Now we will know the truth. The Mexican is the favourite. Rome is close, but Carapz doesn't give up.
