At last! He too is beatable. For once, in the presence of a fantastic Filippo Ganna in tricolour jersey, even the Martian has to raise the white flag.

In a time trial, such as this one at Lake Garda (31.2 km flat), the Italian champion showed his skills as a specialist by winning the stage with an impressive average of 53.434 km per hour. An extraordinary performance, that of Ganna, which allowed him to return to victory after a fast of 256 days. This is his first success of 2024. A fast that has tested him emotionally, as could be seen on his arrival.

With a lump in his throat, Filippo can barely say. "A victory that is worth a lot. It is never easy to win in these trials, especially in front of a champion like Pogacar who even when he loses manages to put on a great show. I worked hard all week to finally manage to beat him. It was an incentive for me, together with the public, to overcome my limits as well..."

A happy Ganna, also in projection of the forthcoming Olympic races, did not however take the scene away from Tadej Pogacar. In fact, the pink jersey still finished second (+29 seconds), giving another strong push to his ranking rivals, who all more or less fell.

The best of the other big names, Welshman Geraint Thomas, fourth at one minute and 14 seconds from Ganna, although he leapfrogged Colombian Martinez into second place, was more than three and a half minutes behind the maglia rosa. Worse Martinez, for him a day to be erased. He practically loses to everyone: both to Pogacar, who inflicts a 1 minute 15 second gap on him, and to Thomas, who is at least half a minute ahead of him in the time trial. "In the final I managed myself," Pogacar pointed out to emphasise that he did not go at full speed.

Translating the numbers means that the Slovenian, on the eve of the first stage in the Alps, has practically got his hands on the Giro d'Italia. Of course, as the super realists say, anything can still happen, not least the bad weather hanging over the race, but the superiority of the pink jersey is so manifest that it becomes difficult to think that the other rivals can threaten him.

Indeed, the impression is that they are all already moving to limit the damage and somehow earn a place on the podium.

Returning to Ganna's success, this is the fourth Italian victory in the Giro after Jonathan Milan's three sprints. But for Ganna, 27 years old, already the hour recordman and Olympic champion in the time trial and team pursuit, this victory is worth double. Especially after the snub of a week ago when, in the Perugia time trial, Pogacar had inflicted 17" on him at the finish line after making up over a minute in the uphill finish. For the Piedmontese rider, who had also set an excellent time, it had been a blow that was difficult to digest. Now with this performance, on a course designed for specialists, Ganna can look forward with more optimism to the Paris Olympics, where the time trial is expected to be a very fast course. On this terrain Ganna has few rivals. So let us say that this exploit can be considered an excellent test before the Games.

Also worth mentioning is the good performance of Antonio Tiberi, who took sixth place with a delay of one minute and twenty from Ganna. The young man from Lazio, so far one of the most active among the Italians, is now fifth in the general classification with a gap of over five minutes. Behind him, in sixth place with over six minutes, the Dutchman Arensman, who nevertheless came third in the time trial with a delay of 1', 07",

As we were saying, this Sunday we go to the Alps (Manerba del Garda-Livigno, 222km) with a passage over the Mortirolo and a fairly tough finale that could cause new movements in the classification. It is likely that the pink jersey will try to deal a new blow to its rivals. But the unknown factor of the cold and bad weather expected during the stage and especially at the finish in Livigno may weigh heavily.
