Giuli: groundless accusation of censorship for film on Giulio Regeni
For the Minister of Culture, the docu-film on the Veneto researcher received two denials of funding in 2024, a stop that did not trigger any controversy at the time. For the same work 'an application for tax credit was also submitted at the end of December 2025 and is still being examined'
"I do not share either on an ideal or moral level" the choice of the Selective Commission on the docu-film on Regeni "but it is not the result of a political choice: the ministry cannot intervene without violating the principle of third party" This is how the Minister of Culture, Alessandro Giuli, responding in the Chamber to the question from the PD on the exclusion of the documentary on Regeni from the contributions for cinema. 'Attributing to the ministry a desire for censorship is a groundless representation: the tragic case of Giulio Regeni has a political, social and cultural relevance that is independent of any audiovisual product concerning him'.
In the past, no controversy for a similar request
"It is significant that the project was evaluated in two different years and by different sections of the Commission. This confirms that we are faced with a technical judgement repeated over time that, as you know, I do not share either on an ideal or moral level," Giuli emphasised again in his speech on the documentary "Giulio Regeni, tutto il male del mondo". After asserting respect for the principles of neutrality imposed by the Italian legal system, Giuli noted that 'in the face of the first failure of funding in 2024, no public controversy of a similar magnitude appears to have developed, and I invite you to reflect on this. The case was only turned into a political-media battleground after the second failure, despite the same previous regulatory framework'.
We also applied for tax credit
For 'completeness', the minister finally clarified that 'for the same work, an application for tax credit was also submitted at the end of December 2025, which is still being examined'. In conclusion, 'attributing a desire for censorship or political conditioning to the Ministry of Culture is a baseless representation. And the tragic case of Giulio Regeni, I repeat and strongly confirm, has a political, social and cultural relevance that is independent of any audiovisual product concerning it, whether well or badly made'.
Return of the docu-film
A few hours after the minister's speech in the Chamber of Deputies, the production companies Ganesh Produzioni and Fandango announced the return to theatres of the docu-film that had hit the headlines, as a reaction to the ministry's decision to exclude the work from funding for cinematographic works.
More than 60 theatres, also thanks to the support of Circuito Cinema, have decided to re-programme the documentary directed by Simone Manetti: starting today, 8 April, in the cities of Rome, Milan, Turin, Bologna and Florence. "Giulio Regeni - Tutto il male del mondo" was released as an event on 2, 3 and 4 February, after the preview in Fiumicello (UD), on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the murder of the Italian researcher found near Cairo on 3 February 2015.
