Extraordinary feat by Italian Sofia Goggia on her comeback after the dramatic accident on 5 February with a fractured tibia and malleolus. After her second place on Saturday in the tough Cup downhill in Beaver Creek (Colorado, USA), the first of the season, the Bergamasque is first in the World Cup Super-G, when the top 40 in the race, among whom are all the favourites for the final victory, have come down.
With a time of 1'03"90, the Italian skied ahead of Lara Gut-Behrami of Switzerland (+0.48) and Ariane Raedler of Austria +0.55. Goggia skied to perfection safe and solid as never before in turns, showing herself superior on every section of the course. Fifth place for Federica Brignone, sixth for Marta Bassino and ninth for Elena Curtoni when there were about ten athletes to go.
Italian Goggia, who had returned to competition 10 months after breaking her tibia, was on the podium in the downhill race yesterday. For the 185th time at the start of the World Cup, the Italian raced in Beaver Creek for the 56th podium of her career. The first was on 26 November 2016, when she was third in the giant slalom in Killington (USA). The Italian champion now has 25 victories: 18 in the downhill and seven in the super-G.
