Farewell to Gianni Mattioli, founder of the Green Lists
He was MP and Minister for Community Policies in Giuliano Amato's government
"It is with deep sorrow that I learn of the passing of Gianni Mattioli, founder of the Green Lists, former Member of Parliament and Minister of the Republic. There goes one of the most authoritative protagonists of environmentalism in Italia, a man who knew how to combine scientific rigour, civil commitment and political passion'. Thus Angelo Bonelli, AVS deputy and co-spokesperson of Europa Verde. "Together with Massimo Scalia, he was one of the main architects of the historic anti-nuclear battle that changed Italia and a point of reference for scientific environmentalism in Italy. Gianni Mattioli dedicated his life to defending the environment, researching sustainable energy models and building an ecological culture based on knowledge and responsibility towards future generations. His passing is a great loss for the environmental movement, for politics and for Italia. On behalf of Europa Verde and on my own behalf I express my sincerest condolences to his family and to all the people who shared with him a long path of civil and political commitment. Bye Gianni, rest in peace'.
Mattioli was minister for Community Policies in Giuliano Amato's government, between 2000 and 2001; undersecretary at the Ministry of Public Works during the governments of Romano Prodi and Massimo D'Alema, between 1996 and 2000; spokesperson for the Greens in the 1990s, and the party's first group leader in the Chamber of Deputies. He was born in Genoa in 1940.
