On Google Maps, the ‘Gulf of Mexico’ is also referred to as the ‘Gulf of America’
Denali, the highest peak in North America, will also be renamed Mount McKinley in the United States
Google Maps has renamed the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America in the United States – including in Italia – in line with US President Donald Trump’s executive order. In the rest of the world, however, both names will be used.
North America’s highest mountain, currently known as Denali, is to be renamed Mount McKinley
Denali, the highest peak in Alaska and the highest mountain in North America, will also be renamed Mount McKinley in the United States, in accordance with the US President’s directives.
“We have a long-standing practice of applying name changes when they have been updated by the official government body,” Google said in a post on X. “When official names vary between countries, Maps users see their official local name. Everyone else in the world sees both names. This applies here too,” Google Maps clarified.
Former President Barack Obama renamed the Alaskan mountain Denali in 2015, in recognition of the region’s indigenous people. However, the change has not yet been implemented on Google Maps.
