A dive where the water is bluest. But with the guarantee that the depth does not immediately become too deep, that there is assistance for bathers, and that once you have finished swimming there is no lack of space to play on the sand. This is how child-friendly beaches should be, ideal facilities for family holidays to which the recognition of 'green flags' goes. For the 2025 edition, the number of beaches selected by 3,075 Italian and foreign paediatricians has risen to 158. With three new entries: two in Baia Domizia (Caserta, first time for the province), one in Paola (Cosenza). Outside Italy there are eight flags: five in Europe, three in Africa.
The record of Calabria
.Calabria is confirmed in first place for the number of 'flags' (21 in all), followed by the two islands Sicily (18) and Sardinia (16). In terms of density, however, Abruzzo prevails (one selected beach every 11.8 km) on a podium that has Emilia Romagna in second place (one flag every 13.5 km) and Marche in third (13.8 km). The province of Salerno, with 9 green flags, is the one with the most awards, followed by the metropolitan city of Reggio Calabria (8) and Latina (7).
The criteria
.The characteristics of the smallest bathers' friendly resorts: a comfortable beach with the necessary space between umbrellas to allow free and undisturbed play. A calm, clean and friendly sea where the water does not immediately become too high. And then beach attendants, equipment and services, catering facilities. Not forgetting entertainment.
"Considering last year's increase in the presence of foreign families with children (up to 35-40% more than in pre-pandemic years) who decide to spend their holidays at the seaside in Italy, it was decided to also translate into French and German the decalogue for child safety at the seaside, already present in English and Spanish translations," announces Italo Farnetani, creator of the green flags and president of the International Workshop of Green flags.
Pediatricians' choices
.The paediatricians who selected the flags 'worked on a voluntary basis, without remuneration, profit motive or sponsor intervention,' the expert recalls. "It was a professional indication and a medical opinion drawn up on the basis of knowledge of the real needs for the growth, health and bodily and psycho-affective development of minors. The selection of the locations to be recommended is made exclusively through doctors' recommendations, received by 31 January'.
