Grande Tokyo ship delivered to the Grimaldi Group

The Grimaldi Group's new vehicle transport vessel Grande Tokyo was delivered and christened in Shanghai. It is the tenth ammonia-ready vessel, prepared for the future use of ammonia as an alternative fuel, to join the company's fleet. And it is also the last of seven sister vessels ordered from the Chinese shipyards of the China State shipbuilding corporation (Cssc) group.

The Grande Tokyo is designed to transport vehicles (cars, SUVs, vans, both electric and traditional fuel) as well as other types of rolling cargo. The ship offers a cargo capacity of 9,241 ceu (car equivalent unit) and has four decks that are also used to transport large rolling cargo, including heavy loads of up to 250 tonnes and a maximum height of 6.5 metres.

The ship, which is 200 metres long, 38 metres wide and has a gross tonnage of approximately 77,500 tonnes, explains a note, "is named after the city of Tokyo, as a symbolic tribute to Japan and its central role in Grimaldi's services to Asia. The group serves several Japanese ports with direct scheduled connections between Asia and Europe, the Persian Gulf and East Africa, and continues to consolidate its presence there". The inaugural voyage of the Grande Tokyo will depart in the next few days from Ningbo (China), bound for Brazil. The ship will set sail with about 6,800 cars on board destined for the ports of Paranaguá and Rio de Janeiro.
