Gunman enters Mar-a-Lago, killed by Secret Service. Trump was at the White House

The US Secret Service announced that a gunman was shot dead after entering the security perimeter of Mar-a-Lago, President Donald Trump's resort in Palm Beach, Florida. Although Trump often spends weekends at his resort, he was at the White House during the incident. First lady Melania Trump was also with the president.

The man killed at Mar-a-Lago by the Secret Service has been identified as 21-year-old Austin Tucker Martin from North Carolina. This was reported by the New York Post citing police sources. His family had reported him missing on Saturday. Authorities are investigating where he acquired his firearm and pointed out that he was not known to the police.

According to the Secret Service, the man was 'observed from the north gate of the Mar-a-Lago property carrying what appeared to be a shotgun and a can of petrol'. The incident occurred at 1:30am on Sunday morning.

Palm Beach County Sheriff Rick Bradshaw, speaking at a brief press conference, said the man was confronted by two Secret Service agents and a sheriff's deputy. "He was ordered to throw away the two pieces of equipment he was carrying. At that point he put down the gas can and raised his rifle in a firing position," Bradshaw said. The two officers and the deputy "fired to neutralise the threat".

The FBI asked residents living near Mar-a-Lago to check any security cameras in their possession for footage that could help investigators.
