Hacker attacks on the Chamber of Deputies: email accounts targeted, including Meloni’s
As regards the Prime Minister’s email account, sources at Palazzo Chigi have clarified that it is not the one used by the Prime Minister for government communications
Key points
A cyber-attack has recently been carried out on the Chamber of Deputies’ IT systems, which also affected the email accounts of numerous MPs, including that of Giorgia Meloni in her capacity as a Member of Parliament. This was a large-scale attack that affected the entire system but was nevertheless kept under control by the Chamber’s technical staff.
Meloni’s postbox
In particular, with regard to the Prime Minister’s email account, sources at Palazzo Chigi state that it is not the one used by the Prime Minister for government communications.
Meloni’s and two MPs’ email accounts hacked
The cyberattack on the Chamber of Deputies, it is understood, targeted three email addresses: in addition to that of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni (who is also a Member of Parliament), those of former Under-Secretary Andrea Delmastro (FdI) and Lega member Paolo Formentini.
Montecitorio: there is no emergency
“This is not an urgent matter,” sources at Montecitorio emphasise, “and it arises on a daily basis.” The same sources clarify that ‘all protective measures have been put in place, including in collaboration with ACN (the National Cybersecurity Agency), with which a specific protocol is in place’. These measures may also include the temporary deactivation of certain IT system functions, in accordance with standard practice. It also appears that, over the past few days, similar attempts to attack and put pressure on IT systems have intensified, targeting other national, European and international institutions as well.”
Rome Public Prosecutor’s Office awaits a report and launches an investigation
The Rome Public Prosecutor’s Office is awaiting an initial report from the Postal Police regarding the cyber-attack on the Chamber of Deputies’ IT systems, which also affected MPs’ email accounts, including that of Giorgia Meloni in her capacity as a Member of Parliament. In light of the evidence, the prosecutors at Piazzale Clodio will open an investigation into unauthorised access to a computer system.
