Hard prisoners, PDL dem against 'confinement' on islands

Until about ten years ago, Sardinia housed in the island's prisons very few detainees under the hard prison regime (the so-called 41-bis), which then gradually grew to about a hundred. Now their number is expected to reach a new peak: over 160 are expected in the coming weeks, in line with the policy of 'concentration' of the most dangerous prisoners in the islands' prisons announced by the Ministry of Justice, which is determined to implement the 'fast track' for the islands introduced in the prison system in 2009 but never actually applied. This, explains Dem Senator Marco Meloni, 'means having about 260 in Sardinia out of a total population of detainees under the 41 bis regime that is usually between 750 and 800'. But today, concentrating 'a third of dangerous prisoners in a single region is a total injustice that makes no logical sense'.

"It is not clear for what reason it is better for these prisoners to be on the islands", underlines to Parliament 24 Meloni, first signatory of a bill to stop the line pursued by via Arenula that would like to distribute prisoners under the hard prison regime in seven prison facilities 'dedicated' to 41-bis, three of which in Sardinia.

"Given that the ministry can define according to its own lines where it is best to house these prisoners who are the worst criminals in Italia", as confirmed by the fact that among them are "the heads of the most heinous criminal organisations", Meloni concludes, "it is really not understood why it should give priority" to the islands, and Sardinia in particular.
