The Calabrian health service is out of commissariat. A 17-year-long ordeal of inefficiency and staff shortages that drove many Calabrians to seek treatment outside the region has been lifted by the Council of Ministers, to the great joy of regional president Roberto Occhiuto.
A 17-year-long commission
The receivership was an extraordinary measure, adopted in 2009, to tackle the exorbitant financial and structural problems that had eroded the internal system. Occhiuto speaks of a 'historic result. Seventeen years in this straitjacket, which we got rid of'.
Cdm revocation
The revocation was decided by the Cdm on the proposal of the Minister for Regional Affairs Roberto Calderoli, and with the favourable opinion of the Ministers Giancarlo Giorgetti (Economy) and Orazio Schillaci (Health). For the Undersecretary to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers with responsibility for the South, Luigi Sbarra, it is 'a result of absolute value, representing a commitment kept by President Meloni, who had already indicated this objective in the election campaign'.
Comparison with territories indispensable
Now the responsibility for a strategic sector such as healthcare returns to the Region. An efficient healthcare system will have to be built, but it will be crucial to deal with the territories that have been tried by decades of shortages and hardships.
