At 7 p.m. on the dot, Tim Cook appeared in the heart of Apple Park to unveil the iPhone 16. The latest family of smartphones made in Cupertino are those that come with generative artificial intelligence, the eagerly awaited Apple Intelligence on which there remain many doubts about the timing of release in Europe.
The anticipation for iPhone 16, as always, was high. And even on the stock market, the share price lived with a certain nervousness while waiting for the event to begin. Precisely with regard to the stock's performance during the launch days, there is some curious data. According to Dow Jones market data, since the launch of the first iPhone in 2007, Apple's stock has dropped an average of 0.3% on the day of the iPhone announcement. While it rose after the event, and averaged 2.2% growth from the date of the announcement to the day of the release. Also looking at historical data, the stock tended to continue its ascent after the iPhone release, gaining an average of 12% six months from release day.
On iPhone 16, however, any historical estimation could be misleading. Because in the middle is artificial intelligence, which actually paves the way for a major new change. Most Wall Street analysts believe that the Apple Intelligence-related updates will lead to what has been called a potential super update cycle, as the features will not be available to users with older versions of the smartphone, forcing them to buy newer models to try out the generative AI features. But let's see what Apple presented at the event.
Apple Watch 10
The first to be unveiled is the Apple Watch 10, which becomes wider and less thick, with a battery that recharges very quickly (80% in half an hour). In fact, in terms of size, the Watch 10 becomes as large as the Watch Ultra, which, however, remains bulkier. Improvements to the display, which becomes much more visible. The device is also water resistant up to 50 metres. On the health side, the most interesting feature is the measurement of sleep apnoea. The company has stated that 80 per cent of people with sleep apnoea go undiagnosed. Apple's Series 10 uses an accelerometer to measure breathing disorders while users sleep and analyses this data every 30 days. This feature was created using a large dataset, Apple said, and the company expects approval from the FDA and other regulators 'very soon'.
On the Apple Watch 10, to improve phone calls, Apple has incorporated a neural network that eliminates background noise to make conversations clearer. No Watch Ultra 3, however: the more advanced Model 2 remains, arriving in different colours and materials.
