Flotilla, Italians detained in Libya: 'Treated like illegal immigrants'
Two Italians detained in Libya transferred to Benghazi: 'Treated like illegal immigrants'. Risk of deportation looms
Key points
The two Italian Flotilla activists detained in Libya were reportedly transferred to Benghazi and treated as possible illegal immigrants. This was reported by sources familiar with the matter, explaining that they could soon be deported. The humanitarian convoy heading towards Gaza was stopped by the militias of General Khalifa Haftar in the Sirte area. The group, about ten activists, reportedly lost contact while travelling through the country. Among them were also an activist from Puglia and one from Piedmont. The Farnesina has activated the crisis unit to verify the situation.
The Flotilla's communiqué
"Ten civilian participants of the Global Sumud Land Convoy were arrested by the Libyan Arab Armed Forces (LAAF) and the authorities of eastern Libya (National Salvation Government) after crossing the 5+5 line near Sirte in good faith to conduct peaceful negotiations on behalf of the convoy and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza. The Global Sumud Flotilla calls on governments around the world to demand their immediate release'. This was announced by the Italian delegation of the Global Sumud Flotilla in a note.
"The arrested participants, among them two doctors, are Alicia Armesto Nunez (Spain), Laura Kwoczala (Poland), Jenelle Jones (USA), Maria Paula Giménez (Argentina), Lucas Ezequiel Aguilera (Argentina), Matias Alvarez Rodriguez (Uruguay), Ana Margarida França Santana Baptista (Portugal), Ashraf Khoja (Tunisia), Domenico Centrone (Italy), Leonarda Alberizia (Italia)," it reads.
"The ten delegates volunteered to enter the 5+5 security zone in order to negotiate passage for the humanitarian mission. The last communication from the group,' it is reported, 'was received at 15:22 local time on 24 May, when one of the delegates reported that the group was being transferred to three white vans. No direct contact has been established since then. According to information from unofficial channels, the authorities in eastern Libya said that the participants had entered the area without authorisation and that procedures for their expulsion were underway'.
Wounded in ground convoy in Libya
"Despite communication difficulties, we have learned that there were injuries in the violent attack suffered by the ground convoy in Libya. Someone among the foreign activists received such heavy blows that they lost consciousness'. Italian Global Sumud Flotilla spokeswoman Maria Elena Delia said. 'They seem to be taking them by bus westwards, perhaps to Misurata,' she adds.
