With the high temperatures, the fire emergency also broke out. From Sardinia to Campania, the flames were not long in coming. The balance of the day on Sunday is not exactly comforting and attention remains high, because with temperatures rising, the alert will not cease.
In Sardinia, 24 fires in a few hours
.In the north and south of Sardinia, in addition to the high temperatures, there were also fires. In the entire region, where the thermometer marked 40 degrees, there were 24 fires. Accomplicated by the wind and the strong heat, the flames devastated several portions of Mediterranean scrub and fields.
Alghero airport closed for hours
The most dramatic situation was recorded in the north-west of the island, where the flames extended as far as Alghero's Riviera del Corallo airport, which was closed for several hours because of the column of smoke that made visibility for planes impossible. All incoming flights were diverted to the airports of Cagliari and Olbia, causing inconvenience to passengers. In the countryside of the Santa Maria La Palma area, where there are many farms, several houses and agricultural structures had to be evacuated as a precautionary measure.
Fire brigade and civil defence
In order to put out the fire, in addition to the ground teams of the fire brigade, the Forestry Corps and the Civil Defence, aerial vehicles, helicopters, including a Superpuma, and a Canadair which took off from Genoa, were deployed. No less worrying was the situation in other localities: in Ozieri, flames licked a suburb. Fear and inconvenience also in Ossi, Muros and the Ittiri countryside. There were also fires in southern Sardinia, in the territories of Quartucciu and Villacidro.
Fire also in Campania
.Campania is also not exempt from fire-related problems. Specifically, the flames affected the provinces of Salerno, Naples and Caserta. Problems also occurred in the municipality of Vietri sul Mare, where a vast fire affected the forest area. In Salerno, the municipal police reopened the connecting road in the direction of Arechi Castle and Croce di Cava, which had been closed today following the fires in the Bonadies hill area. Inspections and clearing continued at the site.
