Highway Code: Ministry says there are no restrictions for those aged 85 and over
Stricter penalties for using a smartphone whilst driving have been confirmed, and these have also been extended to pedestrians whilst crossing the road
“With regard to today’s reports concerning restrictions on those aged over 85, the MIT clarifies that, at the express request of Minister Salvini, the provisions on this matter were removed some time ago from the code of conduct set out in Title II to avoid penalising this age group. Consequently, in the final text, the reference will also be removed from the Table in Title V, on which experts from other government departments have also worked.” This is stated in a press release from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.
“At the same time,” the statement continues, “more thorough medical examinations are planned to ensure the safety of those aged over 85 and of all users. Meanwhile, stricter measures on the use of smartphones whilst driving have been confirmed, and these have been extended to pedestrians whilst crossing the road; however, the use of hands-free devices or earpieces remains permitted provided it does not interfere with safety regulations.”
