Vintage trains set off from Campania
A project supported by Fondazione FS Italiane and the Campania Region, which has allocated 2.7 million: the trains will take passengers to monuments and villages
Historic train journeys are set to begin in Campania: the programme includes 35 historic train journeys between September and December, along some of the main routes of cultural, scenic and tourist interest. The aim is to encourage people to discover the diverse local areas, promoting their identity, heritage and specialities through historic rail travel. For this initiative, the Campania Region has allocated 2.7 million from the Campania Regional Development Plan (PSC).
This approach has already yielded positive results in numerous other schemes. Indeed, to date, the service has been shown to run 100 per cent on schedule, and an average occupancy rate (58 per cent) higher than the national average has been achieved. The programme is being implemented by ACaMIR (Campania Agency for Mobility, Infrastructure and Networks) in its capacity as the implementing body.
The project aims to make rail travel not merely a means of reaching a destination, but a genuine experience of learning about and discovering Campania. Through the revival of historic railway lines and rolling stock – restored and enhanced by the FS Italiane Foundation – these routes make it possible to create itineraries linking major cultural attractions, archaeological sites, villages, inland areas and landscapes of exceptional beauty. ‘Centoporte’ carriages (1930s) and ‘Corbellini’ carriages (1950s) will be used for services to the Royal Palace of Caserta, the Pietrarsa Museum and archaeological sites, whilst ALn 668 railcars will be used on the Avellino–Rocchetta S. Antonio line. A total of 6,000 seats will be available.
The mobility strategy provides for last-mile transport via integrated GT buses and encourages cycle tourism by offering free bicycle transport in the historic luggage compartments on routes from Naples to Caserta, Pietrarsa, Pompeii, Contursi and Paestum.
The project presentation was attended by Mario Casillo, Vice-President of the Campania Region with responsibility for Transport, Mobility and the Sea, and Vincenzo Maraio, Regional Councillor for Tourism, Regional Promotion and Digital Transition, Maria Teresa Di Mattia, Director-General of Acamir, and Oreste Orvitti, Head of the Museum Complexes at Fondazione FS Italiane.
