Home security enters the smart era: how the relationship between technology and prevention is changing
Home security is undergoing a transformation that goes far beyond technological advances. It is changing the way people perceive risk, the value they place on their homes, and the role that innovation can play in their daily lives. This trend reflects a broader shift: more and more people are investing in solutions that offer peace of mind, continuity and control, rather than simply protection.
The figures confirm the scale of the problem. In Italia, a burglary is reported roughly every three minutes, and the number of reports exceeds 155,000 each year. This figure most likely reflects only part of the problem, given that a significant proportion of victims choose not to report the incident.
However, focusing solely on the figures would mean losing sight of the most important aspect. The issue is not just about the rise in burglaries, but their impact on people’s lives. Victims of burglary often say that the financial loss is only part of the problem. What really leaves a mark is the loss of that sense of security that makes one’s home the place where one feels truly safe.
The way in which break-ins occur is also changing. Whilst for many years the focus has been on homes left empty during the holidays, an increasing number of incidents are taking place in the evening or at night, whilst people are at home. This shift is fundamentally changing our approach to security: it is no longer simply a matter of protecting a property whilst the owners are away, but of ensuring peace of mind in everyday life.
This development is also transforming the market. Security is increasingly seen not as an expense to be incurred after an incident, but as a preventative investment – just as has happened with energy efficiency, health and cyber security. Consumers are no longer simply looking for a device, but for a service that supports them in their daily lives.
