Mourning in the world of horse racing: Varenne, the greatest trotter of all time, has died. ‘It is with immense sadness that we announce the death of the Captain,’ reads the post on the legendary horse’s Instagram page. He passed away at the age of 31 whilst at the LJ stud farm in Eboli, in the province of Salerno, where he had spent his final years.
The announcement on social media
“It is with immense sadness that we announce the death of the Captain,” reads the post on his official Instagram page announcing the stallion’s death. “Varenne passed away last night and the vet has confirmed the cause of death as a sudden heart attack. We are devastated to have learnt the news this morning and wish to remember him alongside all his fans and celebrate his victories,” the post reads.
“Today, Varenne has spread those wings to fly elsewhere; may you always run free and always remain our Captain, and may the earth lie lightly upon you. May you find much love, Enzo,” concludes the post, referring to Enzo Giordano, Varenne’s owner, who passed away at the age of 71 in 2025.
