Heatwave: ‘red alert’ in all 27 cities today – a record high
All towns monitored by the Ministry of Health’s heatwave surveillance system will be placed on red alert
The summer of 2026 has broken all previous records: on Thursday 6 August, all 27 cities monitored by the Ministry of Health’s heatwave surveillance system were on ‘red alert’. Across the entire peninsula, with no regional capital excluded, the highest alert level will be in force, posing potential health risks to the general public. Level 3 in Ancona, Bari, Bologna, Bolzano, Brescia, Cagliari, Campobasso, Catania, Civitavecchia, Florence, Frosinone, Genoa, Latina, Messina, Milan, Naples, Palermo, Perugia, Pescara, Reggio Calabria, Rieti, Rome, Turin, Trieste, Venice, Verona and Viterbo. Today and tomorrow, Tuesday 4 and Wednesday 5 August, only Messina and Reggio Calabria are not on red alert and are classified as ‘orange’: Level 2, posing a health risk to vulnerable people.
