How do aspiring doctors study? Online mock exams start on 18 September

The Open Semester is underway, lectures have begun and online mock exams are on the way: candidates are studying in advance, increasingly using their smartphones and AI. Data from MOOD and thefaculty reveal new study habits. The calendar of online tests is now available to help candidates practise for the Open Semester subjects.

Preparation starting earlier and earlier, smartphones playing a central role, and artificial intelligence becoming part of study habits. This is the picture of aspiring medical and veterinary professionals at the start of the 2026 Open Semester, which got into full swing on 1 September with the start of lectures in Physics, Chemistry and Biology for students aiming to gain entry to degree programmes in Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine.

But how do you make them?

The data collected by thefaculty, the technology partner of MOOD – the project promoted by 44 Italian universities and funded by the Ministry of Universities and Research – reveals that preparation is becoming increasingly early, continuous, digital and personalised. It begins even before students set foot in the lecture theatre: by the end of July, over 11,000 students had already started preparing. The preferred device? The smartphone, chosen by more than 8 out of 10 students, especially in the afternoon: activity picks up between 3 pm and 6 pm, peaking around 5 pm.

AI

Alongside the telephone, artificial intelligence is also carving out a place for itself in students’ daily routines: more than one in two students use tools such as flashcards and personalised quizzes to identify mistakes and guide their revision. And it is mainly female students who are turning to thefaculty’s AI Coach: 56 per cent of female secondary school pupils use it, compared with 44 per cent of their male peers; a difference that remains evident at university too, with 53 per cent of female students using it compared with 47 per cent of male students.

Subjects that are a "cause for concern"

Between mock exams and revision, there are certain subjects that cause more concern than others: thermology and thermodynamics, and the anatomy and physiology of animals and humans, are feared by 48 per cent of students, followed by applied chemistry and fluid mechanics (45 per cent). As for future plans, Medicine remains the first choice for around 85 per cent.
‘Students’ preparation is becoming increasingly early, continuous and personalised, and the way they study is also changing. We see this with AI, which is becoming an increasingly natural support tool: it does not replace traditional study, but can make it more effective, helping students to understand better and organise their own learning journey. Today, one in two students uses AI and, in light of this change, we are investing in this direction with MOOD,’ comments Christian Drammis, CEO of thefaculty.

With the start of lessons, exam preparation is also getting into full swing, with the first exam scheduled for 10 December. From 18 September onwards, students will be able to test their knowledge with dedicated mock exams covering the various units of the ministerial syllabus by accessing the thefaculty app.

The programme:

• 18 September 2026 (Fri–Sat–Sun) – specific focus on units 1–2

• 2 October 2026 (Fri–Sat–Sun) – specific focus on units 1–2–3

• 16 October 2026 (Fri–Sat–Sun) – specific focus on units 1–2–3–4

• 30 October 2026 (Fri–Sat–Sun) – specific focus on units 1–2–3–4–5

• 13 November 2026 (Fri–Sat–Sun) – specific focus on units 1–2–3–4–5–6

• 27 November 2026 (Fri–Sat–Sun) – full programme

• 7 December 2026 (24 hours) – full programme

• 21 December 2026 (Mon–Tue–Wed) – full programme

• 28 December 2026 (Mon–Tue–Wed) – full programme

• 8 January 2027 (24 hours) – full programme

The simulations will be structured to follow the progression of the course, enabling students to review what they have learnt step by step and maintain a consistent level of preparation throughout the semester.

Support tools

Among the main tools recognised by the Ministry to support students during the Open Semester, MOOD has made a web platform available free of charge – also accessible via Universitaly – developed with the technological support of thefaculty. Students also have access to the app, available on mobile phones and PCs, which offers an adaptive study plan, updated according to each student’s progress, as well as mind maps and flashcards to consolidate knowledge, subject-specific practice exercises, simulations and exercises with thousands of annotated questions, including both multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blank questions, also available in a gamified version with comparative leaderboards, and over 100 hours of theoretical, preparatory and subject-specific videos covering the syllabus for Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
