Benyamin Netanyahu has given the order to carry out immediate raids on the Gaza Strip, the Israeli prime minister's office announced. "Following security consultations, Prime Minister Netanyahu has ordered the army to carry out powerful attacks on the Gaza Strip immediately." Israel accuses Hamas of violating the US-brokered ceasefire.
Closely, Palestinian media reported a wave of Israeli air strikes in Gaza City. At least three air strikes were reportedly launched by Israel against Gaza City, while local sources covered by international media reported that the attacks targeted an area near the largest hospital still in operation in northern Gaza.
The Hamas-affiliated Al-Aqsa TV station reported that Israeli fighter jets also attacked the western part of the city of Rafah in the south of the Gaza Strip. According to the Gaza Civil Defence, at least five people were killed in the attacks.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said that Hamas will pay "dearly" for today's attack on Idf soldiers in Rafah and violations of the agreement under which it was supposed to return the bodies of hostages remaining in the Strip. "The attack on Idf soldiers in Gaza by the terrorist organisation Hamas crosses a clear red line, to which the Idf will respond with great force," Katz said in a statement. "Hamas will pay again and again for attacking soldiers and violating the agreement to return the bodies of the fallen hostages."
Earlier, there had been firefights in Rafah between Hamas militants and IDF soldiers. According to Haaretz, Hamas militants opened fire at IDF forces with snipers and anti-tank missiles, and the Israeli military responded with artillery fire.
