Hungary, police: 'No reason to ban the Budapest Pride'
Clear sign of discontinuity between the Magyar government and the management of its predecessor Orban
New air in Hungary also for civil rights. The Hungarian police said that they will not ban the Pride parade scheduled for 27 June in Budapest, in stark contrast to what happened last year, when the event was banned by the nationalist former premier Viktor Orbán.
An important sign of discontinuity, reflecting the new, more "Westernist" course inaugurated by Peter Magyar, premier who defeated Orban himself last month in the elections, encouraging congratulations from European leaders. "During the notification procedure for the Pride 2026 parade and the subsequent in-person consultation with the organisers, no grounds emerged for banning the assembly," the police told the agencies.
Orban had also passed an anti-Lgbtq+ law, on which the European Court of Justice ruled last April with a null rejection, through the judgement issued in case C-769/22.
