Hunter Biden, 54, son of US President Joe Biden, 'is guilty'. That was the verdict reached by the jury, after three hours in chambers, at the end of the criminal trial in which he was charged with three offences related to the illegal purchase and possession of a firearm, while he was a drug addict. Biden was found guilty of all three offences.
Hunter Biden faces up to 25 years in prison and $750,000 fine
Hunter Biden, son of US President Joe Biden, faces a sentence of up to 25 years in prison and a $750,000 fine. Biden was found guilty of three criminal offences related to the purchase of a firearm in 2018. Usually, however, people with no prior record who do not commit a violent crime with their firearms are not sentenced to a prison term.
Joe Biden: 'I accept outcome of trial, respect justice process'
"'I will accept the outcome' of the criminal case and 'continue to respect the judicial process as my son Hunter considers an appeal,' Joe Biden said after learning the news that his son Hunter was found guilty by the jury of purchasing and possessing a gun while using drugs.
First family of convicted US president
This is the first time that an immediate family member of a sitting US president has been convicted in a criminal trial, even though the facts surrounding the conviction predate Biden's election in 2020. The conviction is bound to create a major embarrassment for the president and possible problems for his re-election campaign. Suffice it to say that his son Hunter is convicted of illegal possession of a firearm on the very day the president is scheduled to speak at a gun control conference, of which the Democrat is a big supporter.
Biden's words at the start of the process
When the trial began last week, Biden had issued a statement in support of his son: 'I am a president, but I am also a father. Jill and I love our son and are proud of the man he has become today,' he said. 'Hunter's resilience in the face of adversity and the strength he has shown in his recovery have been inspiring. As a father I have boundless love for my son, trust in him and respect for his strength. Jill and I will continue to support him with love". In a later interview, Biden said he would pardon his son in case of conviction.
