ID cards: from tomorrow, renewals for the over-70s will be valid for life
The rule applies to those who have already reached the age of 70 at the time of application and applies to renewals issued from 30 July 2026 onwards

From Thursday, the renewal of the electronic identity card for those who have already turned 70 will be valid indefinitely. The measure, which was included by the government in February in the PNRR decree-law – subsequently converted into law – is now ready to come into effect.
Who is affected and from when
The rule applies to those who have already reached the age of 70 at the time of application and applies to renewals issued from 30 July 2026 onwards: it is not retroactive, so anyone who already holds a valid Cie does not need to take any action and will be able to obtain a renewal with an unlimited validity period when their current document naturally expires. The card remains valid for travel abroad.
The reasons
The aim – as stated in the explanatory report submitted to the Council of Ministers for approval – is ‘to simplify administrative procedures for older people, reduce inconvenience and administrative burdens, and ease the workload on local authorities, in line with the principles of simplification and proportionality’.
