The experience accumulated by academics at the end of active service is a heritage that risks being lost without coordination

The Union of Emeritus Professors of Italian Universities (Upe), formally constituted on 8 April 2025, was born from the coming together of various associations that had already been active for some time at a number of universities. Its objective is ambitious but concrete: to give form and institutional coherence to a network of emeritus professors who, although no longer in active service, wish to continue to make a significant contribution to academic life and the progress of society.

The associations of professors emeriti, each with its own history and specificity, have chosen to join forces in a shared vision. The establishment of the UPE stems from the desire to promote a more systematic and structured collaboration between the different realities, overcoming fragmentation and enhancing synergies. The founding memorandum of understanding foresees the opening to new memberships by emeritus associations that share the same cultural, scientific and institutional goals.

From an organisational point of view, the EPO is configured as a horizontal and participative network, in which each association maintains its autonomy while contributing to a common project. Coordination of activities is entrusted to the Forum of Presidents or Heads of member associations, who operate on an equal footing. This body represents the collegial decision-making forum for the planning of common initiatives.

The Upe's activities include the promotion of cultural events - conferences, seminars, debates, lectio magistralis - and the implementation of research projects, with a particular focus on those of an interdisciplinary nature and with social relevance. The Union also aims to draw up documents and make proposals to be submitted to the universities, the Crui, the Cun and the Mur, with a view to active collaboration with the institutions of the university system.

All emeritus professors belonging to Upe member associations automatically acquire the status of 'Upe Associates'. Emeritus professors who are not members of such associations, but are interested in participating in the activities, may instead obtain the status of 'Upe Correspondents' upon request.

The Union is also open to the contribution of honorary professors, university lecturers, researchers, as well as external experts and professionals, belonging to public or private bodies, who can offer useful expertise for the development of specific initiatives. To encourage maximum participation, the Upe also promotes the online dissemination of its activities, making them accessible to a broader and not necessarily academic audience.

The Upe and its associations therefore represent a valuable form of subsidiary collaboration, capable of strengthening the link between university and society. The values on which it is founded are manifold: institutional historical memory, cultural integration, mediation between academic generations, and the social responsibility of science. These values are translated into concrete actions not only aimed at the protection and transmission of intellectual heritage and the promotion of dialogue between knowledge but also at building bridges between the university and society

Among the areas in which emeritus professors' associations best express their potential are academic mentoring and university counselling. The experience accumulated over decades of scientific and teaching activity constitutes a heritage that risks being lost without appropriate intergenerational transmission mechanisms. They act as an ideal link between academic generations, facilitating the transfer of knowledge, methodologies and values that characterise university life.
