The Pope: the death penalty is unacceptable
Leo XIV: the common good can be protected and the requirements of justice can be upheld without resorting to capital punishment
‘The death penalty is unacceptable because it undermines the inviolability and dignity of the person. The common good can be protected and the requirements of justice upheld without resorting to capital punishment: effective prison systems have been developed which protect citizens but, at the same time, do not completely deprive the guilty of the chance to redeem themselves.” The Pope stated this on X, adding the hashtag #NoDeathPenalty to his message on today’s World Day Against the Death Penalty. Prevost’s post comes at a time when there is talk of the live stream of the execution of Nidal Hasan in the United States.
