The award ceremony for Il Premiolino, the oldest and most prestigious Italian award
dedicated to journalism, supported by Pirelli, was held on Monday, 30 September at Milan's Piccolo Teatro Grassi. Each year, the jury, composed of leading names in national journalism, assigns Il Premiolino to six professionals working in print, radio, television and new media who have distinguished themselves for their professional commitment and for having defended, through their work, freedom of the press and of opinion from any
conditioning.
Since 2024, the Pirelli Prize for Schools has also been instituted, for the best article
or investigation concerning the world of education.
Awards
The awardees of the 64th edition for 2024 are Stefania Battistini (TG1), Annalisa Camilli (Internazionale), Mariano Giustino (Radio Radicale, HuffingtonPost), Gaia Piccardi (Il Corriere della Sera), Daniele Raineri (La Repubblica), Lorenzo Tondo (The Guardian).
They are joined by the winners of the first edition of the Pirelli Prize for School, Eugenio Bruno and Claudio Tucci of Il Sole 24 Ore Scuola.
The evening
The evening opened with greetings from Marco Tronchetti Provera, Pirelli's executive vice chairman: 'We are living through a challenging season, full of technological and social transformations, dramatic conflicts and strong geopolitical imbalances. And a free, conscious and responsible commitment to the dissemination of quality knowledge is indispensable not only to build a new season of sustainable, environmental and social development, but also to seek paths to a just and lasting peace. Commitment to the quality of information and therefore of civil coexistence fits into this framework. And Pirelli is delighted to support, once again this year, a prestigious initiative such as "Il Premiolino", which enhances the best expressions of written, radio, television and web journalism".
The Jury
The 14 members of the 2024 jury are Chiara Beria di Argentine (president), Piero Colaprico (vice-president), Antonio Calabrò (as director of the Fondazione Pirelli), Giulio Anselmi, Francesco Costa, Ferruccio de Bortoli, Mattia Feltri, Milena Gabanelli, Enrico Mentana, Donata Righetti, Beppe Severgnini, Gian Antonio Stella, Benedetta Tobagi, Carlo Verdelli. Chiara Beria di Argentine, president of the jury of Il Premiolino, recalledthe crucial importance of journalism today as in the past: "In Milan, in 1960, a group of special correspondents led by Enzo Biagi wanted the Premiolino very badly. Sixty-four years later, I have the honour of presiding over a jury of journalists - big names from the print and online media, famous faces from television - who, often very young, have entered the prize's roll of honour voluntarily to defend its spirit and the reputation they have built up over these long years. A challenge that Pirelli has supported with liberality, vision and respect for the past two years. Ours is pride and passion for a profession often dismissed as obsolete like other intermediate bodies and in the name of a deceptive artificiality. And yet the world turns. Almost suddenly we find it torn apart between cyber attacks and trenches from the last century. In such a geopolitical scenario, and the Premiolino 2024 bears witness to this, the valuable work of reporters, particularly from the press, who have the same desire and need to report critically on what is happening as the reporters who were the founding fathers of the Premiolino.
The Pirelli Prize for Schools is launched
An important new feature of the 2024 edition of Il Premiolino is the Pirelli Prize for Schools, dedicated to one of the most important institutions for the development of the new generations, as underlined by the words of Marco Tronchetti Provera, Pirelli's executive vice-chairman: "The Pirelli Prize aims to enhance the world of schools, not only as a fundamental element of economic development, but as a pillar of an open, active, responsible and supportive community. An institution that trains not only study, but also the construction of the imagination, curiosity and the joy of discovering and learning. It is there that the future of every country is born. Pirelli, with this Award to Eugenio Bruno and Claudio Tucci, intends to underline the importance of the commitment of the School editorial staff of Il Sole 24 Ore for the growth of the quality of education and, more generally, of culture and civil coexistence for the new generations'.
At the end of the evening, actor Sergio Leone read excerpts from the speech delivered by President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella at the 2024 Fan Ceremony, from The Manifesto of Free Journalism by Albert Camus, and from The Freedom of the Press by George Orwell. The award ceremony was held in the historic hall of the Piccolo Teatro Grassi in Milan. The winners were presented with their prize, consisting of a cash sum and a hand-written linen parchment, originally designed by artist Riccardo Manzi for the first edition of Il Premiolino.
