Ilaria Salis was released in the morning from the maximum security prison in Budapest's Gyorskocsi utca, where she had been held for more than 15 months, and was transferred to her home where she will serve her pre-trial detention pending the end of her trial.
Ilaria Salis was arrested on 11 February 2023 together with two German anti-fascists and taken to prison on charges of participating in two attacks on three extreme right-wing militants and being part of a criminal association. On 15 May, a second-instance commission of the Budapest court upheld the appeal filed by her lawyers and granted her house arrest with an electronic bracelet and upon payment of a €40,000 bail. After several days of waiting, the transfer, which left Italy last week, arrived and Ilaria Salis was released from prison. The third hearing in the trial against her is scheduled for 24 May.
Roberto Salis: first step towards return to Italy
'We finally have the chance to re-embrace Ilaria, let's hope this is a temporary stage before we finally see her in Italy,' Roberto Salis, the father of the Milanese activist who was released from prison in Budapest today to go under house arrest, told ANSA.
