Emma Bonino transferred to San Filippo Neri in Rome. "Stable condition, she is always alert"
His battles for the right to abortion and for the liberalisation of soft drugs have remained emblematic, as has his political consistency, often acknowledged even by conservative opponents
'Emma Bonino has been transferred to the Stroke Unit of the San Filippo Neri hospital'. This was announced by the ASL Roma 1, pointing out that the transfer is aimed at 'guaranteeing an appropriate setting' for the care of the patient who was admitted to the Santo Spirito hospital yesterday, Sunday 30 November. Her condition, although serious, seems stable and Bonino appears lucid. The cause of the hospitalisation is said to be respiratory failure. The former senator's condition, reported +Europa sources, 'is stable and she has always been alert'.
Historical Radical
Bonino, a historical figure of Italian radicalism, had been dealing for years with a pulmonary microcytoma, a particularly aggressive form of lung cancer that she had been diagnosed with in 2015. After a long course of treatment, she announced in 2023 that she had successfully completed her therapy.
The battles for abortion and the liberalisation of soft drugs
Known and appreciated even outside Italy, Bonino has always been respected for her determination, even when her positions appeared uncomfortable or against the tide. Her battles for the right to abortion and for the liberalisation of soft drugs have remained emblematic, as has her political consistency, often recognised even by conservative opponents.
Subscriber to the Radical Party since 1975
Her political history dates back to the 1970s: a member of the Radical Party since 1975, she was among the protagonists of the referendum campaigns on abortion and nuclear power, carried out with actions of civil disobedience and innovative communication for the time. In the following years she campaigned for policies on soft drugs, for controlled heroin programmes and for international battles on human rights, against the death penalty and world hunger.
Elected several times to the European Parliament
She was an MP from 1976 to 1994, president of the Transnational Radical Party between 1991 and 1993 and secretary the following year. Elected several times to the European Parliament - in 1979, in 1984 and then in 1999 with the list under her name - she held the post until 2006. With the victory of the centre-left she was then elected with the Rosa nel Pugno and appointed Minister for International Trade and European Policies in the Prodi government. In 2008 she entered the Senate with the Democratic Party, becoming Vice-President of Palazzo Madama.
