With reference to the basic 'tranche', Intermarine's share is EUR 1.165 billion, corresponding to approximately 73%, and Leonardo's share is EUR 430 million, corresponding to approximately 27%. A similar breakdown also applies to the optional 'tranches'.

The signed contract, underlines a statement, "is the result of a path characterised by significant investments in R&D activities on new materials and innovative and cutting-edge production technologies. In particular, it follows an intense activity of preliminary studies conducted for the contract signed in 2021' between Intermarine and NAVARM focused on 'Risk Reduction Studies and definition of the CNG Unit project'.

The implications for the Italian Navy

.

The start-up of the programme 'will allow the Italian Navy to equip itself with highly innovative minesweepers' that 'will represent a worldwide unicum in terms of operational capabilities expressed and cutting-edge technologies in the specialised sector of assets for control, defence of the seabed and critical underwater infrastructures'.

The new-generation coastal minesweepers, thanks to the exclusive characteristics of their hulls (resistance to shocks generated by underwater explosions and low magneto-acoustic signatures), combined with the operational potential offered by the most modern combat system technologies - such as sonar and multi-domain command and control, including the integrated management of unmanned vehicles - will be able to carry out a broad spectrum of missions. These include the clearance of mined areas and so-called seabed surveillance operations for the control and protection of critical underwater infrastructures (such as oil & gas pipelines and maritime data networks) and the protection of cultural heritage and the marine environment.

With a length of about 63 metres and a displacement of about 1,300 tonnes, the Cng/c will be able to conduct mine clearance operations operating within potentially minefields, guaranteeing the safety of the crews, employing different types of autonomous means as multipliers of effectiveness and enhancement of detection and defence capabilities. The Cng/cs, due to their technical and operational characteristics, will be the most innovative Mine Countermeasures Units in the world, reaffirming Italy's role as a leading country from a technological and doctrinal point of view in the Mine Warfare and Underwater Dimension sector.

"In an international context in which all NATO navies and navies of more advanced countries have to renew their conventional minesweeper fleets, the Cng programme will undoubtedly be a game changer, a source of interest and potential for export activities and international cooperation.

Production

.

The naval units will be produced at Intermarine's Sarzana (La Spezia) shipyard, with significant employment benefits that will see a significant increase in the company's workforce. The entire combat system, consisting of the Sadoc 4 cyber-resilient command and control system, advanced radar and electro-optical sensors, a new broadband sonar with mine detection and classification capabilities, and an integrated multi-band communications and data link system to ensure the highest and most effective level of interoperability, will be produced and supplied by Leonardo.
