The new Surface Laptop and Surface Pro have arrived, the new Copilot+PC computers ready for the era of generative artificial intelligence. Microsoft is staking everything on these machines, because in addition to renewing the hardware by adopting the Snapdragon platform with ARM architecture, it has launched the Copilot+PC label that certifies whether a computer can meet the demands of its generative AI. The two solutions presented a few days ago in Milan start at EUR 1,229.

What is new compared to the past on an aesthetic level are the 13-inch OLED display for the Surface Pro and the 15-inch screen, also HDR, for the Surface Laptop. Both are powered by the new Qualcomm Snapdragon X Series processors, which house an NPU of up to 40 TOPS (trillions of operations per second), which means unprecedented autonomy and speed. We'll try them out and tell you.

But in the meantime, let's see what happens when you press the Copilot Key, a specific button to access all the exclusive AI-based features. During a presentation, Microsoft showed us some use cases. They explained that the system works both locally and online. In each case, the prompt goes online because it has to be verified. Redmond does not want embarrassing or inappropriate questions, such as generating drawings that could cause controversy, to use a soft expression. Someone will remember the case of the undressed film stars.

In any case, we are not yet at the machine that manages generative AI completely locally. And we wonder if it will ever exist. It still needs an internet connection.

The first example is Cocreator inside Paint.

Sketch out a doodle and ask Copilot to continue it. It works well, all too well. In the sense that from a little house drawn in squares like you did in kindergarten, Cocreator brings out something beautiful. Restyle Image allows you to apply different predefined styles. Let's say it doesn't follow your style, but cleans and redraws. On this front, it is worth mentioning that to date, 80% of applications have been optimised for the ARM platform. Not all of them. Applications such as Photoshop, Lightroom, Illustrator, Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve Studio will offer higher performance on these devices.

Second example translations.

The most interesting feature is Live Captions, which allows real-time translation of any audio into English, enabling users to easily follow videos, podcasts and conferences in over 40 different languages. Basically, you speak in Italian and it translates into English. It needs to be tried out, but if it worked, it would be a real help for those who don't feel confident.

Third example: video calls

.

Also integrated in the video call area are Windows Studio Effects: applies visual effects and audio/video enhancements during video calls or recordings, including creative filters and the Eye Contact teleprompter. It works by activating the camera and can be set up for both Microsoft Teams and WhatsApp. Eye Contact allows you to read a document on the screen during a video call without moving your eyes from the camera. It's as if you know everything by heart. Now we know for sure that everyone is reading.

Productivity with Copilot.

The operating principle of these tools is basically to work with two windows. On the one hand Copilot becomes the heart of the Ai experience and on the other the application. If you then choose Copilot for Microsft 360, you have everything integrated. Here is a guide.

The Recall Case.

The most anticipated feature, however, will not be there, at least for now. It is a sort of 'time machine' that quickly finds visual content previously viewed on your PC, with options to save snapshots and manage the privacy of searches and data. The problem is probably just the privacy that needs to be well controlled and then perhaps the processing capacity of the machine.
