The new Surface Laptop and Surface Pro have arrived, the new Copilot+PC computers ready for the era of generative artificial intelligence. Microsoft is staking everything on these machines, because in addition to renewing the hardware by adopting the Snapdragon platform with ARM architecture, it has launched the Copilot+PC label that certifies whether a computer can meet the demands of its generative AI. The two solutions presented a few days ago in Milan start at EUR 1,229.
What is new compared to the past on an aesthetic level are the 13-inch OLED display for the Surface Pro and the 15-inch screen, also HDR, for the Surface Laptop. Both are powered by the new Qualcomm Snapdragon X Series processors, which house an NPU of up to 40 TOPS (trillions of operations per second), which means unprecedented autonomy and speed. We'll try them out and tell you.
But in the meantime, let's see what happens when you press the Copilot Key, a specific button to access all the exclusive AI-based features. During a presentation, Microsoft showed us some use cases. They explained that the system works both locally and online. In each case, the prompt goes online because it has to be verified. Redmond does not want embarrassing or inappropriate questions, such as generating drawings that could cause controversy, to use a soft expression. Someone will remember the case of the undressed film stars.
In any case, we are not yet at the machine that manages generative AI completely locally. And we wonder if it will ever exist. It still needs an internet connection.
