In Milan, the local police will be permanently equipped with Tasers, following a six-month trial that concluded in January. This was decided by the City Council, which approved the amendment to the Local Police Regulations. The use of Tasers was authorised with a number of amendments that were passed by the council, even after the majority – including some councillors – had expressed doubts about the correct use of the device.
An amendment tabled by the majority has been approved, calling for more patrols in the evening and at night, setting the minimum number of operational patrols at 25 and 20 respectively.
By the end of 2024, the figures stood at 16 and seven respectively.
Another amendment that has been approved calls for permanent police presence in the city’s nightlife areas. Meanwhile, an amendment from the majority calls for the local police chief to report to the mayor on the use of tasers after 12 months of deployment. “It would be a serious matter if anyone were to die,” said Michele Albiani, PD councillor and chair of the Security Committee, “we are calling for the trial to be extended for a further 12 months”.
