Chinese mines in Nicaragua exceed one million hectares
The government awarded 72 concessions to 16 Chinese companies in less than three years
Chinese mining companies now control over one million hectares in Nicaragua. This is what emerges from official data analysed by Noticias100%, Confidencial and La Prensa, according to which the government led by Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo has awarded 72 concessions to 16 Chinese companies in less than three years, surpassing the threshold of 1,004,000 hectares earmarked for mining.
Four companies concentrate about 70 per cent of the concessions and areas, with packages that in some cases exceed 200,000 hectares each, distributed between the north of the country and the Caribbean autonomous regions.
The concessions, often transferred between related companies, cover areas that collectively exceed several Nicaraguan departments in size.
According to Noticias100%, Confidencial and La Prensa, environmental organisations denounce preferential treatment reserved for Chinese operators: accelerated procedures, reduced obligations of environmental assessment and concessions issued even in protected areas.
Some of the areas also fall within mining reserves managed by state entities already sanctioned by the United States.
