Two great holiday musicals in Rome: 'Moulin Rouge' and 'Matilda'

In Rome for two great musicals that we will not have the chance to see in other cities. The first Italian production of 'Moulin Rouge' will be staged at the new Sistina Chapiteau in Tor di Quinto. While 'Matilda', which has already toured Italy, returns to Rome at the Sistina Theatre, again in an Italian version. Close to the capital, in Orvieto, there is the 32nd Umbria Jazz Winter, with over 80 events;

From 30 December to 3 January, the 32nd edition of Umbria Jazz Winter, more than 80 events, 5 stages, 23 bands, about 150 musicians, but above all, a valuable and heterogeneous programme. Over the five days of the Festival there will be about 120 hours of music with the leitmotif of jazz, from traditional to contemporary, from newcomers to the public's favourite stars. Not only jazz for amateurs, however, because Umbria Jazz does not disdain the more popular genres, from country and rock 'n' roll to street bands and gospel. On the 30th evening at the Teatro Mancinelli three exceptional pianists together, with Stefano Bollani, Danilo Rea and Dado Moroni;

Until 4 January at the Sistina Chapiteau (Viale di Tor di Quinto) the musical "Moulin Rouge", with Diana Del Bufalo and Luca Gaudiano in the lead roles; a Sistina production, directed by Massimo Romeo Piparo, live orchestra, dialogue in Italian and songs in the original English. The impassioned story of Christian, a young writer who falls in love with the star of the Moulin Rouge, Satine, a love put to the test by the presence of the Duke, rests on a musical fabric made up of hits by David Bowie, Lady Gaga, Queen, Elton John, Rihanna, Madonna and many others. The musical is based on the 2001 film of the same name, starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, directed by Baz Luhrmann; the play was created in 2018, winning several Tony Awards on Broadway and is still being staged in London, on Broadway and elsewhere.

Until 4 January at the Sistina Theatre the musical "Matilda", with Sebastiano Somma and Roberta Lanfranchi; in Italian. At the centre of the story is a young girl with a lively intelligence and endowed with superpowers, who through her passion for reading and books manages to "distract" herself from a life of abuse and harassment: cultivating stories and tales, Matilda manages to meet two precious women on her path - a teacher and a bookseller - who "save" her and are in turn saved from a sad resignation. The play, with a libretto by Dennis Kelly and music and lyrics by Tim Minchin, premiered in London in 2010 and has been touring the world ever since, winning seven Olivier Awards and five Tony Awards.
