A reading of ISTAT data to 2023 on the labour force returns a positive balance for all the North-West regions (Piedmont, Liguria and Valle d'Aosta), although the area is not the best performing in the country. The employment rate 15-64 years old rises to 67.3%, gaining one percentage point compared to 2022, and is higher than the national average (61.5%), which increases by 1.3 percentage points per year. The unemployment rate fell to 6.2% (-0.5 p.p. compared to 2022), significantly lower than the Italian figure of 7.8% (-0.4 p.p. compared to 2022). For both indicators, it is Valle d'Aosta that registers the best values and performance in the area: the employment rate grows from 69.8% to 71.8% in 2023 (+2 p.p.) and the unemployment rate drops from 5.4% to 4.1% (-1.3 p.p.), placing it on the podium of the respective regional rankings (in order, second and third place). Liguria follows, with the employment rate rising from 66% to 67.4% (+1.4 p.p.) and the unemployment rate from 7.1% to 6.3% (-0.9 p.p.). There are more timid signs of improvement in Piedmont, whose rates go from 66.3% to 67.1% (+0.8 p.p.) and from 6.6% to 6.3% (-0.3 p.p.) respectively. Valle d'Aosta also stands out for its youth employment rate (15-29 years old), at 42.8%, the third highest in the country; the rates in Liguria (39.7%) and Piedmont (38.5%) are lower, but still higher than the national figure (34.7%). Looking at the provincial breakdown, Cuneo is the only one in the region to rank among the top twenty in Italy in terms of youth employment rate: it ranks fourth with a rate of 47.4%. Analysing the differential in the employment rate for 30-64 year-olds and 15-29 year-olds, it should be noted that all the regions in the area show a higher gap compared to the national average value (Valle d'Aosta: +37.6 p.p.; Piedmont: +37.1 p.p.; Liguria: +35.6 p.p.; Italy: +35.1 p.p.), thus showing a more significant employment imbalance. Further considerations emerge from the analysis of data from the Excelsior System of Unioncamere and the Ministry of Labour and Social Policies. In the North-West the number of planned entries in 2023 is 14.2 per 100 residents aged 15-64, lower than the average for the country (14.7%). However, this low value can only be attributed to Piedmont, which has an entry rate of 13.4%, compared to 15.5% in Liguria and 24.4% in Valle d'Aosta. Finally, it is interesting to emphasise how the needs of the area's businesses are more oriented towards more qualified professional figures than those of the country as a whole. In the three regions the average classification level of the figures sought (2.62) is, in fact, higher than the Italian average (2.59), with a peak in this case in Piedmont, where it reaches a score of 2.63.
