"No to the increase in excise duty for diesel. It would be a 3.1 billion euro sting on motorists'. This is stated by Assoutenti, which rejects the hypothesis of an increase in excise duties on diesel fuel envisaged by the structural budget plan being studied by the government. "On every litre of diesel purchased by Italian motorists,' Assoutenti explains, '56.1 per cent, equal to EUR 0.91 per litre at current prices, goes in taxes by way of VAT and excise duties. The situation is even worse for petrol, where taxation weighs in at 59.8%, equal to 1.04 euro per litre of green".

"In 2023 alone, Italians paid a total of EUR 38 billion due to taxation (VAT and excise duties) on fuels sold in Italy,' explains President Gabriele Melluso. 'Today, excise duty on petrol is EUR 0.728 per litre, that on diesel is EUR 0.617 per litre: an eventual alignment of the excise duties on diesel to the level of those in force on petrol would increase the price at distributors and would be equivalent to a higher outlay of 5.5 euros per full tank, resulting in a total sting on motorists of 3.1 billion euros per year, should diesel consumption remain at the levels of 2023".

'We reiterate once again how, apart from the speculation on prices at petrol stations that occurs at certain times of the year, the government must intervene on the fuel taxation front by applying mobile excise taxes that can offset industrial price increases through a proportional reduction in the tax burden,' concludes President Gabriele Melluso.
