In the first quarter of 2025, there were 2,341 companies involved in judicial liquidation proceedings, an increase of 11.3% compared to the same period in 2024.

This is what emerges from the analysis on judicial liquidations carried out by Cribis, a Crif Group company specialising in business information on Italian and foreign companies, updated to 30 March 2025.

A comparison with analyses of past years shows that, after the drop in liquidations between 2020 and 2022 due to the extraordinary economic support measures, the number of procedures is returning to values more consistent with the ordinary economic cycle. Compared to the first quarter of 2022, when there were 1,912 liquidations, the increase is 22.4%.

Lombardy the region with the most proceedings

.

At a territorial level, Lombardy confirmed itself as the region with the highest number of judicial liquidations in the period under review, with 480 cases, or 20.5% of the national total. This is followed by Latium, which recorded 337 liquidations, Emilia-Romagna with 208, Veneto with 192, and Campania with 183. At the opposite end of the scale are Valle d'Aosta, with just two cases, Molise (four), Trentino-Alto Adige (10) and Basilicata (10).

Trade the most critical sector

.

From a sectoral point of view, the data confirm the critical situation that continues to affect the sectors most sensitive to fluctuations in consumption and rising operating costs. Commerce is the most affected sector, with 713 companies involved in judicial liquidation proceedings in the quarter, a figure that alone represents over 32% of the national total. This dynamic highlights the structural difficulties that the sector has been facing for several years now. It is followed by the Services sector, with 555 cases, Construction (493) and Industry (373).

Duties uncertainty weighs

.

"The increase in judicial liquidations in the first three months of 2025 reflects the continuing economic strains on businesses, linked to both structural and cyclical factors, such as access to credit, energy costs and geopolitical instability, which especially in recent months, since Trump's inauguration to the presidency, has fuelled uncertainty for companies. All these exogenous factors position Italian companies in a complex context, in which the ability to adapt to sudden changes becomes crucial in order to remain resilient,' commented Marco Preti, CEO of Cribis, in a note.
