The death toll from the magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck the island of Flores, in the province of East Nusa Tenggara, on Saturday has risen to 53 dead and 135 injured, according to local authorities. Rescue teams recovered a further six bodies today, bringing the death toll higher. Thousands of people are currently displaced. Searches are continuing through the rubble.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Italian Embassy in Jakarta and the Crisis Unit, continues to provide information to Italian nationals in the areas affected by the earthquake that struck Indonesia. There are over 2,000 Italian citizens registered with AIRE in the country and around 6,000 non-resident Italian nationals registered on the ‘Dove siamo nel mondo’ portal. On the island of Flores, there are around 700 non-resident compatriots registered on “Dove siamo nel mondo”.

The main airports in the area, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, are operational. High demand for flights from international tourists and the local population is leading to limited availability of seats on flights departing from the area.
