In the derby, Inter attack, Milan win. But in the lead is Gasperini's Roma
"Let's avoid taunts," warned Chivu, foreshadowing that a bad air was blowing over this 182nd derby for Inter. He was right, because Inter once again lost in the worst way: dominating the challenge almost entirely (two posts and a penalty saved by Maignan) but being mocked by one of Milan's few effective restarts.
A choral action, born from a Calhanoglu's lightness, led to Saelemaeker's shot. On Sammer's clumsy rebound, the quickest to strike was Pulisc, up to that moment quite in the shade. There, at that moment (the 54th minute), as if a crack had opened, Inter realised that even this derby (their last success dates back to 22 April 2024) was getting out of hand.
The second juncture, which finally sunk the Nerazzurri, was the penalty, taken by Calhanoglu, which Maignan repelled. It was 74 minutes. The penalty (Povlovic's stomp on Thuram) had already been generously conceded by Var, but the Rossoneri goalkeeper's feat fell like an unappealable sentence, certifying Inter's fourth defeat in 12 league games. So many for a Scudetto team. A team that, every now and then, all of a sudden, especially with the big ones (Juve, Napoli and Milan) short-circuits. The opposite of the Diavolo who, so far, has only lost points with the small ones.
However, Allegri's team now flies to second place (with Napoli), two points behind Roma, the real surprise of this tournament. A Milan not particularly beautiful, but cynical and concrete. An A.C. Milan that is almost a mirror of its coach, who has always been a fan of these 'short-muscled' victories, in which practicality ends up prevailing over aesthetics. In a challenge between two rivals who can fight for the Scudetto, it can be said that Inter, a more structured team, especially in attack, fell into Allegri's trap, well aware that they do not have an equally strong front line. The Rossoneri, very solid, had the merit of not disassembling themselves even in the moments of greatest pressure from the Nerazzurri. There is also another element to consider: Pulisic, on his fifth goal, struck at the first useful opportunity. Not so did Lautaro, unlucky at the post, but substantially below expectations, so much so that Chivu, in the second half, replaced him. Even Calhanoglu, also taken over, did not shine. The new Inter coach, when necessary, does not discount the old guard.
"I can't make changes?" replied Chivu regarding Lautaro's substitution. The championship is long and the standings quite short. There is still time to avoid more blackouts. But the taunts, so feared by Chivu, will remain until the next derby
