Nola Freight Village, rail freight traffic booms in 2025 (+50%)
CEO Ricci: 'There is great demand for real estate space, linked to e-commerce'. Punzo (CEO of Tin): "Soon we will have Nagel's warehouses in Nola"
In 2025, the Nola Freight Village recorded a 50% increase (compared to 2024) in the number of trains handled within the intermodal terminal, reaching 2,000 trains per year. As a result, the number of ITUs (intermodal transport units) has also grown significantly, reaching +52% in 2025. According to forecasts for 2026, further growth is assumed, with more than 3,000 trains per year and about 100,000 ITUs handled in total at the intermodal terminal.
As far as road freight traffic is concerned, the figure remains stable in 2025 at around 5.5 million tonnes (5,551,622.56 tons).
"We are very confident about the growth of intermodal traffic in the coming years. The completion of RFI works on the national network,' emphasises Claudio Ricci, CEO Interporto Campano, 'will create the conditions for a strong increase in traffic. Furthermore, the development plans of the Nola Business Park, also considering the CIS, leverage the opportunity of an important territorial promotion tool such as the single southern SEZ. The strategy is based on the growth of light industrial, commercial and manufacturing activities. There is a great demand for real estate space, also linked to the development of e-commerce'.
"Our strength has been the quality of the services and the location, as well as the back-port function of the Nola interport," emphasises Lucio Punzo, CEO of TIN (Terminal Intermodale Nola) _ In addition to the intermodal connections, by road, with Naples and Salerno, we have developed numerous national intermodal services thanks to the trust of the operators, starting with GTS, which was the first operator to strongly believe in the potential and quality of the services we offer. And then,' continues Lucio Punzo, 'the role of captain Gianluigi Aponte in activating MSC trains to Nola was fundamental. To these must be added other operators, such as CFI, FHP group, Multilog and Stante, which operates with Poland'. "With the assumption that the difficulties for the trains, caused by continuous construction sites on the network due to the Pnrr works, will be reduced, our goal for 2026 is to plan the offer of other services and frequencies that would allow us to exceed the threshold of 3,000 trains per year, making the Nola freight village part of the 'top five' of Italian freight villages, in terms of the number of trains 'worked'. Logistics is evolving,' Punzo concludes, 'and soon a logistics operator of international weight such as Kuhne Nagel will be operating in Nola with logistics warehouses covering 15 thousand square metres and will give a further boost to intermodality.
