The economic impact for the social sector generated by more than 530 third-sector initiatives financed by Intesa Sanpaolo in 2023 amounts to EUR 450 million. The figure emerges from the Report - prepared by the bank together with Prometeia - on the social impact generated by the initiatives supported in 2023 by the Impact Department, which aims to enhance the contribution of the Third Sector.

How is the impact calculated?

.

Through the Sroi (Social Return on Investment)1 method, it is shown that for every euro invested, more than 3 euros of social benefits are generated: in fact, the economic impact for the social will be 450 million euros that will support 3,260 employees within the organisations and generate 200 million euros of social added value.

Education, health and poverty

34% of benefits contribute to quality education, 33% to health and well-being, 10% to tackling poverty and inequality, and 7% to environmental sustainability. Sixty per cent of the impacts are on direct beneficiaries such as students, carers and patients. Forty per cent extend to the whole community.

In areas such as health and social care, there is also a high incidence of indirect benefits, particularly for caregivers. In the cultural sector, the impacts mainly extend to the community, through the expansion of cultural offerings and increased tourist flows.

Direct Benefits

.

In particular, education and health have a particularly high proportion of direct benefits:

1) more than 30,000 students and people to be professionally qualified and more than EUR 100 million in social impacts that will be generated, due to the acquisition of skills, increased future salary and higher self-esteem and critical thinking skills. Significant effects are also expected for the community (EUR 22 million) in the form of welfare savings.

2) more than 35,000 people assisted in hospital, at home or needing help in maintaining autonomy and more than EUR 40 million in social impacts that will manifest themselves in different ways: physical and psychological wellbeing, longer life expectancy, better pain management.

Looking ahead to 2024, Andrea Lecce, Head of Intesa Sanpaolo's Impact Department, explains in a note: 'In the first nine months of this year we disbursed 210 million euro to the non-profit world and we want to continue to grow in order to be a point of reference and a unifying element between those who provide resources and those who use them to generate social impact and represent the common good as a civil value for the communities in which we operate.
