US imposes new tariffs on polysilicon imports

The US is planning to impose new tariffs on imports of polysilicon, a key material used in solar panels and semiconductors. This was announced by Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, who described the material as a ‘key product’ for chips. Speaking at the White House, Lutnick said, ‘We are setting prices so that the Chinese can no longer dump their goods, and we are imposing tariffs to encourage domestic production. “We already have an industry in this sector, but it is too small.” Trump signed an executive order on the matter, following an investigation by the Department of Commerce into polysilicon imports.

On the same occasion, the US President signed an executive order to deny citizenship to children born in the United States as part of so-called ‘birth tourism’.
