The seven days of mourning for Ali Khamenei
After four months of delays due to the war, the grand and heavily guarded funeral of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is taking place across Tehran, the Shi’ite holy sites and the burial in Mashhad. The state funeral of Iran’s former Supreme Leader, who was killed on 28 February 2026 in the US-Israeli attack, will mobilise millions of people and will be organised by the theocratic regime – now led by his son and successor, Mojtaba – amidst massive security measures and with an expected turnout of between 15 and 20 million people. Here are the key stages:
* FRIDAY 3 JULY. Khamenei’s coffin, together with those of family members killed in the same attack, arrived at the Grand Mosalla Mosque in Tehran, Iran, and the coffin was placed on a raised platform to allow for condolences from domestic authorities and a ceremony for foreign representatives, with delegations from 100 countries.
* SATURDAY 4 JULY – MONDAY 6 JULY. Mass public funeral services with the coffin on continuous display for three days at the Mosalla Mosque. Public and private offices in Tehran will remain closed, accompanied by a total ban on private traffic in the city centre and the closure of airspace.
* TUESDAY 7 JULY – WEDNESDAY 8 JULY. On Tuesday, the coffin will be transferred to Qom, the theological and doctrinal heart of the Islamic Republic, for a solemn procession led by religious figures, whilst on Wednesday the body will reach the holy Iraqi cities of Najaf and Karbala, the symbolic culmination of the Shi’a axis’s religious solidarity.
* THURSDAY 9 JULY. Khamenei’s body will return permanently to his hometown, Mashhad, for the official burial within the sacred precincts of the Imam Reza Mausoleum, the most important and revered place of pilgrimage in the whole of Iran.

Iran-Lebanon, Tehran: support for Beirut’s sovereignty
Support for Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity is a consistent and principled policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran. This was stated by Iran’s acting Defence Minister, Major General Seyyed Majid Ebnolreza, during a meeting with his Lebanese counterpart, Michel Menassa.
Ebnolreza reiterated that security, stability and peace in Lebanon have always been a core principle for Tehran and that this approach is pursued “with seriousness”.
These statements come against the backdrop of contacts between Iran and Lebanon, at a time of heightened regional tension and focus on the security balance in the Levant.

Israel denies NYT report on attacks on Iranian negotiators
As usual, the latest New York Times article on Israel and the Iranian negotiators is fake news. “A complete fabrication of reality”: this is what is stated in a press release issued by the Israeli Prime Minister’s office, refuting the New York Times report that the United States feared Israel might kill the Iranian negotiators.
This is according to *The Times of Israel*. The US newspaper reported yesterday that, during negotiations earlier this year, US officials had indirectly warned the Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf of the possibility that Israel might attempt to assassinate them.

The CMA CGM vessel struck in the Strait of Hormuz may be scrapped
The CMA CGM San Antonio container ship, which was hit by a missile in the Strait of Hormuz in early May, is so badly damaged that the French shipping group may send it for scrapping, its chief executive, Rodolphe Saade, said on Friday in the south of France.
The attack injured several crew members. The ship is one of dozens of commercial vessels targeted during the war in Iran.
After being stranded in the strait for weeks, the San Antonio was escorted to safety, the CEO added, without giving further details.
The group has no plans at present to resume sending ships to the Gulf, he said,
Saade, who controls CMA CGM alongside other family members, has reiterated his opposition to transit fees for the use of the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran: Pasdaran commander attends ceremony for Khamenei, for the first time since the start of the war
The head of the Revolutionary Guards, the powerful General Ahmad Vahidi, has appeared in public for the first time in months, as Tehran prepares for the funeral of the late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, which is set to last several days. Photos published online by Iranian state media show the general attending a meeting on Khamenei’s funeral arrangements, before sitting beside his coffin during a more intimate ceremony held in Khamenei’s honour on Thursday evening near the Supreme Leader’s former residence in central Tehran. According to experts, Vahidi has become a leading figure in shaping Iran’s hardline stance in negotiations for a possible definitive end to the war. He is believed to be part of a small circle in direct contact with Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, who remains out of the public eye after being wounded in the Israeli attacks on 28 February that killed his father, whose funeral is to be held. Vahidi had not appeared in public since 8 February, weeks before the start of the war in Iran. During the conflict, Israel killed senior Iranian military and government officials and also threatened the life of Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei.

The US warned Iran of Israel’s intentions to kill negotiators
Last spring, the United States warned Iran of Israel’s plans to assassinate the Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, and the Speaker of Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who were engaged in negotiations with Washington to end the conflict and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. This was reported today by the Washington Post and the New York Times, citing senior officials with knowledge of the matter.
Fearing that an attack could jeopardise the negotiations, the United States asked “other countries in the region to warn Iran of the possibility that Israel might target the two officials”, the NYT reported. “By killing those people, you’re killing the pragmatists,” said an official quoted by the Washington Post.
As early as March, when the Trump administration began exploring diplomatic options to end the war, US officials had told their Israeli counterparts not to continue killing Iranian leaders, a diplomat has revealed. According to analysts interviewed by the Washington Post, “the fact that US officials felt it necessary to go a step further and warn Iran that its chief negotiators could be killed demonstrates the tension in relations between the United States and Israel and the Trump administration’s limited influence over the Israeli government.”

Iran: Trump says, ‘I’ve built a wall of steel against Tehran, but I don’t want to close the Strait of Hormuz’
“I imposed a blockade on Iran that was, in fact, a wall of steel,” US President Donald Trump told CNBC. “No ship,” Trump continued, “has managed to reach Iran. They have 300 per cent inflation; they’re earning nothing. They need food. They need maize, wheat and soya, and we will ensure that it is exclusively our American farmers who supply them.” “I don’t want to be a president,” he said, referring to the global energy crisis caused by the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, “who is remembered for having caused ‘a great global depression’.” “That,” Trump continued, “was Herbert Hoover, and it was a terrible thing.” Now, if I wanted to play the tough guy and close the Strait for the next few years, where 21 per cent of the oil will never be extracted, and we’ll no longer be able to get any oil. I’ve seen guests on your programme saying that oil would reach $350 a barrel, and there’d be a depression, because at $350 a barrel, a depression is automatic.” “I said,” Trump continued, “that we had to do something. We did something nobody knew about. Every night, we sent ships off the southern coast, which is the furthest point from where (the Iranians, ed.) have their small weapons. The ships sailed along the coast without lights for a month and a half; many ships set out. They’re big ships, some of them really huge. And in a way, they showed courage in going out to sea. We escorted them out, and nobody noticed. The lights were off, everything was off, everything was silent.”

NATO, Trump: ‘Ridiculous’ that the US maintains a ‘non-reciprocal’ relationship
With less than a week to go before the summit in Turkey, US President Donald Trump has described a “one-way” relationship with NATO as “ridiculous”, commenting on a chart showing the defence spending of the United States (999 billion dollars), the United Kingdom (90.5 billion), France ($66.5 billion), Italia ($48.8 billion) and Poland ($44.3 billion).
“It is ridiculous that the United States should continue down this one-way street when the relationship is not reciprocal. They weren’t there for us!!!”, Trump wrote on his Truth account, referring to the lack of support in the war launched by the United States and Israel against Iran.
