Trump, our military campaign will make negotiating with Iran unnecessary
US President Donald Trump said he was not interested in negotiating with Iran and raised the possibility that the war would only end when Tehran no longer had a functioning army or leadership in power. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said the air campaign could render any negotiations useless if all of Iran's potential leaders were killed and Iran's army destroyed. "At some point, I think there may not be anyone left to say, 'We surrender,'" Trump said. The US president said that "based on what I've seen" the bombing of the school that cost the lives of dozens of Iranian girls was "done by Iran". According to two US officials quoted by the Reuters news agency, American investigators instead believe that the school was hit by an American attack.

Pezeshkian: 'My words misinterpreted. We are forced to react to attacks'
After some of his statements had been interpreted as an announcement of a suspension of attacks against Gulf countries, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said his words had been "misinterpreted by the enemy who seeks to sow divisions with neighbouring countries". Tehran state television reported this on Sunday morning. "It has been repeatedly said that we are brothers and must have good relations with our neighbours. However, we are forced to react to the attacks, but this does not mean that we have a dispute with a neighbouring country or that we want to upset its people," Pezeshkian said. The attacks against the Gulf countries had continued even after Pezeshkian's statements, giving the impression that there were divisions between the political and military leadership in Iran.

Israel estimates that Mojtaba Khamenei is still alive
Israel estimates that Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the Iranian Supreme Guide who was killed a week ago, is still alive. This was written by the Israeli media Channel 12. According to the report, it appears that Khamenei Jr. was injured during an air strike carried out in an attempt to assassinate him, shortly after the assassination of his father. Despite initial reports of serious damage to the compound he was in, the current assessment in Jerusalem is that he managed to survive the attack, although his exact condition remains strongly concealed by the regime in Tehran. New York Times sources, Channel 12 recalls, revealed that there was a lot of tension among the religious leadership in Iran this morning. According to the report, the council that was considering the appointment of the next leader was close to declaring Mojtaba as the official successor, but the project was halted at the last minute due to the fear of some clerics that, once the new leader is officially elected supreme leader, he will become a priority target.

Iran, Crosetto convenes military and industry summits to strengthen defence
"Today I convened an emergency meeting by video conference with the Chief of Defence Staff, General Luciano Portolano, the National Armaments Director, Admiral Giacinto Ottaviani, and representatives of the Italian defence industry. The meeting was attended by some 130 people. The aim of the meeting was to share the complex geopolitical situation, especially, now, in the Middle East; and to stimulate and empower the defence industry on the need to protect national interests, committing itself beyond normal commercial canons". Thus the Minister of Defence, Guido Crosetto, in a note.
'During the meeting,' he explained, 'I urged the defence industry to point out all its operational availabilities, the programmes being finalised and any initiative that could contribute, in a very short time, to further strengthening the defence, especially air defence, of the country, as well as that of allied and friendly countries. I also emphasised that, at such a delicate and dramatic time, it is essential to reduce to a minimum the impediments and bureaucratic procedures that are increasingly out of step with needs that cannot wait and that negatively affect the efficiency and, ultimately, the very security of the country. At this time, it is of fundamental importance that the country's system work in close synergy and with speed in the face of an international situation that could degenerate, creating significant complications and difficulties for Italia in both geopolitical and economic terms,' he concludes.

Iran, Axios: Iraqi Kurds resist pressure to maintain neutrality
The Iraqi Kurds try to maintain neutrality in the conflict with Iran, resisting pressure from both Tehran and Iranian Kurdish militants who would like to launch attacks from Iraqi territory. Kurdish officials pointed out to Axios the region's defensive limitations: '200 Shahed drones could cause a lot of damage here. We have no air defence systems and no way to shoot them down'. The Kurdish leadership also fears being left alone by the US and doubts the US objectives in the war: 'Is it a complete regime change or just personnel?' they asked the US administration. So far, Kurdish forces have prevented Iranian Kurdish militias from launching offensives from Iraq and consider regime change unlikely without American troops on the ground: 'There can be no regime change without soldiers on the ground.
The neutrality of the Iraqi Kurds is also motivated by the fear of reprisals from Tehran: Yesterday, a senior official of the Iranian Defence Council warned that if Iranian Kurdish groups were to operate from Iraq or if elements of the 'Zionist regime' were to cross the border, 'all facilities in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region will be hit on a large scale'. The Kurdish administration emphasises that it wants to avoid becoming 'the spearhead of the conflict'.
Kurdish leaders also denounce the lack of clarity on the part of the United States: although President Trump has called for regime change in Iran, he has not communicated details on how it should take place. "We have trust issues from the past and we do not want to get involved. Who will defend us if the Iranian regime manages to survive this?," added one source. According to the Iraqi Kurds, the Iranian Kurdish militias in Iraq are not sufficiently trained or numerous to launch effective attacks without external support, and so far the Peshmerga have blocked any offensive.
The Kurds' caution also relates to the possibility that the United States may withdraw in the coming weeks: 'The Iranians have built up thousands of years of patience,' notes one official, 'they know that in a few years there will be a new president in the United States and there is no telling what will happen in Israel. Their goal now is simply to resist'.

Iran, W.Post: US intelligence 'unlikely' regime overthrow
A classified report by the US National Intelligence Council claims that a military attack - even a large-scale one - by the US would be unlikely to topple the Iranian regime. The document, confirmed by three sources to the Washington Post and written before the start of operations on 28 February, analyses scenarios of both offensives targeted at leaders and broader campaigns against government and military institutions, concluding that 'the clerical and military regime would respond to the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei by following protocols designed to preserve continuity of power'. The report then defines it as 'unlikely' that the internal opposition would be able to take control of the country, pointing out that 'there is no other force within Iran capable of confronting the power remaining with the regime'.
The paper also points out that the succession of the Supreme Leader remains in the hands of the Assembly of Experts, with the Pasdaran and other security structures playing a significant role, and that 'even if they are unable to effectively project their power to their neighbours, they can certainly dominate within the country'. Analysts quoted by the Post note thatTrump's intention to 'clean up' the Iranian leadership and choose a successor would meet structural limits: 'Bending to Trump would go against everything they stand for,' explained Holly Dagres, an expert at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.
